然而，在這歐洲聯盟（EU）之前身，其歷史淵源可以追溯到 1951 年在二次世界大戰後，由比利時、盧森堡、荷蘭、西德、法國、義大利在巴黎條約（Treaty of Paris）中簽訂組成的跨國性組織，「歐洲煤鋼共同體（European Coal and Steel Community）」。到了 1957 年，上述的六國，在羅馬條約（Treaties of Rome）又簽署成立另外兩個國際性組織，「歐洲經濟共同體（European Economic Community）」、「歐洲原子能共同體（European Atomic Energy Community）」。之後，再演變到 1965 年簽訂的布魯塞爾條約（Merger Treaty），其結合以上三個國際性組織，成立「歐洲共同體（European Communities）」，亦簡稱「歐共體」。直到這個布魯塞爾條約的簽訂，才可以說是正式奠定並展開了現代「歐洲聯盟」的歷史。

至2009年1月，歐洲聯盟（EU）的 27 個會員國：

至2008年12月，歐洲聯盟（EU）有 27 個會員國。然而，其中只有 16 個會員國採用歐元（Euro），這 16 個國家的區域，稱之為歐元區（Euro Zone）；另外，也不是所有的歐盟會員國，屬於申根國（Schengen）。

另外，有三個特別的國家（地方），並非是歐盟國，但卻採用歐元:
Monaco, San Marino and Vatican.
所謂的申根國（Schengen Countries），是根據 1985 年在盧森堡簽訂的申根協議（Schengen Convention ），直至 1995 年，申根協議生效，取消在邊界上的管制與檢查，合法居民可以在申根國家自由移動。
截至2009年1月，申根的成員國增加到25個： Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Denmark, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Austria, Finland, Sweden, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland.
以上這些是申根區國家。※申根區國家中除 Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland 之外均為歐盟國家，然而 United Kingdom 和 Ireland 是歐盟國家，但不是申根協議的成員國。
※最近加入歐洲聯盟的 Bulgaria 和 Romania 尚未完全屬於申根區，預計最遲在 2011 年才會全面開放申根國家的權利。
